Terrestrial Solutions for Safer Driving

Collisions with large mammals like deer, elk or wild boar are a perennial threat to road safety. In the United States alone, deer-vehicle collisions cause up to 200 deaths per year. In total, there were over 1.9 million animal collision insurance claims in the U.S. between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020, causing an estimated $1.1 billion in economic damage.

Because most driving accidents are caused by driver error, radar and autonomous driving technologies can help reduce accidents caused by human error. But what if there were a way to also prevent highly unpredictable driver animal collisions by alerting animals of a risk before the accident occurs?

GenusWave’s Targeted Acoustic Startle Technology (TAST) is a breakthrough approach for separating and safeguarding both animals and humans. TAST emits brief, low noise doses in a frequency band that engages the animal’s startle reflex, causing the animal to remove itself from the area of harm.

Target specificity allows TAST to utilize a a frequency band for which the target species has the most sensitive hearing. It’s proven both safe and effective in peer reviewed scientific literature. At GenusWave, we believe that it’s possible to eliminate nearly all driver animal collisions and fatalities.

How the new deterrent system can be applied to vehicle safety:

An array of sensors (e.g. ultrasound or infrared based) detects the presence of an animal on the road. The sensor triggers a directional loudspeaker which projects a specific, high-intensity noise pulse that temporarily exceeds the noise of the vehicle’s engine. The sound pulse will be projected at a frequency at which the animal’s hearing sensitivity is high and the engine noise is moderate.

Because multiple factors influence animal responses, our next step is to generate the empirical data that indicates with certainty the technology’s ability to prevent deer car collisions.
