2025 Aquaculture UK Awards Finalists Announced

We are thrilled to announce that the University of St Andrews and GenusWave have been shortlisted as finalists for the 2025 Aquaculture UK Awards in the Animal Health & Welfare category!

This collaboration has been recognised for pioneering Targeted Acoustic Startle Technology (TAST), which effectively mitigates interactions between wildlife and human activities (e.g. seals and salmon farms). TAST utilises brief acoustic signals to trigger a harmless startle reflex in specific taxon, effectively keeping them away from areas of conflict or harm (see Götz & Janik, 2015; 2016). Key features of TAST include taxon-specific targeting (minimising impact on non-target species), consistent effectiveness over time (no habituation), and significantly decreased noise doses compared to traditional acoustic deterrents (reduced noise pollution).

This recognition highlights over a decade of research and innovation, and underscores the importance of science-driven solutions for aquaculture. We’re honoured to stand alongside other outstanding finalists who are raising the bar for fish health and welfare across the industry. Congratulations to everyone shortlisted – we are looking forward to celebrating with you in Inverness this June!
