Celebrating Collaboration and Innovation in PNW Salmon Conservation

In March 2025, our Director of Special Projects, Kylie DaCunha, had the privilege of attending the WA-BC American Fisheries Society (AFS) Annual Meeting in beautiful Vancouver, BC. At this event, she co-hosted a Pinniped Interactions Symposium in collaboration with Steven Rossi (LGL) and Megan Moore (NOAA). The meeting and this symposium sparked meaningful discussions surrounding the topics of breaking down barriers for effective science communication, finding effective and timely solutions to management challenges in dynamic ecosystems, and fostering inclusive decision-making processes.
We were thrilled to hear that Kylie was honored with the “Working Group Excellence” certificate for her contributions to the Pinniped Interactions working group. It was equally rewarding to see Oceans Initiative recognized with the Certificate of Appreciation award for significant contributions to protecting salmon runs in the Pacific Northwest using innovative methods and technologies, such as the Targeted Acoustic Startle Technology (TAST).
Following the experience, Kylie remarked, “As I reflect on this experience, I’m inspired to continue building on the conversations and insights shared during the event. I look forward to collaborating with peers and incorporating feedback to make next year’s symposium even more impactful. A heartfelt thank you to Sean Simmons and the rest of the WA-BC AFS Executive Committee for organizing such a fantastic annual meeting. It’s truly a pleasure to engage with such passionate professionals working in support of our marine and aquatic environments.”
