DFO and PSC Led Fraser River TAST Project Earns Binational Honors
GenusWave extends heartfelt congratulations to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and the Pacific Salmon Commission (PSC) on being selected as recipients of the Western Division American Fisheries Society (WDAFS) Conservation Achievement Award and the Washington-British Columbia American Fisheries Society (WA-BC AFS) Innovation Award. This recognition highlights the outstanding leadership, collaboration, and innovation demonstrated through their work on the 2025 Fraser River Targeted Acoustic Startle Technology (TAST) project.
Under the guidance of Brittany Jenewein (DFO) and Tosh Sutherland (PSC), the Fraser River project explored a practical and humane way to reduce pinniped predation on salmon while minimizing impacts to non-target species. By testing a behavior-based acoustic tool in two Fraser River test fisheries, the project aimed to safeguard vulnerable salmon stocks, support better fisheries data quality, and advance environmentally responsible management approaches. Just as importantly, it showcased what can be achieved when agencies, scientists, and partners work together toward a shared conservation goal.
These awards celebrate efforts to promote the conservation, development, and wise use of fisheries resources, and DFO and PSC exemplify those values through their shared commitment to science-based conservation.
