TAST as a mitigation tool for seal-human conflicts in the Helgoland Dune swimming zone
A field study at Helgoland Dune tested an acoustic startle system (TAST) to reduce encounters between tourists and Germany’s largest grey seal colony, tracking 22,086 seal positions across two trials. Seals were 3.57 times more likely to stay in the farther distance zones (10–25 m and >25 m) while signals were active, offering the first empirical evidence that the system can non-invasively reduce human-seal interactions in recreational waters without cutting seals off from surrounding habitat.
