How can you deter seals without affecting other mammals in nearby waters?
Dr. Goetz:
We achieve target-specificity by choosing a frequency band in which the hearing sensitivity of seals is higher than in non-target species such as harbor porpoise. The method has been successful in keeping seals away from the vicinity of a fish farm while not adversely affecting the behavior and distribution of harbor porpoises. In our consecutive study, the same startle-reflex based system reduced seal predation by 91-97% on a fish farm in Scotland over the course of one year. It was a great result - one that was confirmed in a second, shorter-term test on a farm in the same area.
